Pallavolo Update

After arriving 11 days ago in Italy, I have already played 3 matches. Jetlag...what's that? I got off the plane Saturday afternoon (November 20th), and left for Poland Monday morning (November 22nd). Possibly had the highest scoring match of my life with 4 aces, 2 blocks, and 1 kill. I now try to remember back to the match and hardly remember it I was so jetlagged. But after only practicing 2 times together, my team pulled out our first Champions League victory against Lodz.

Next up was our first Italian Championship match against Urbino. Last season Urbino upset us in our first match against them and we weren't going to let that happen again. Once we came out strong, and again had our 3rd set lapse but pulled of the big win in 4.

After only one day of rest...which really wasn't rest since we lifted weights, we had to play another Champions League match. This time against a team from the Czech Republic. Still on a roll from our last two matches we finished this one in 3 sets. It was a great match for our team, playing without one of our best players others had to step it up. Now we are 2-0 in Champions League.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Unfortunately I am here in Italy and can't be with my family but I am very thankful for being in Italy and doing what I do. Spontaneously I asked Aury Cruz (my teammate) if her friend ("The Chef") wanted to cook a turkey and do Thanksgiving dinner. "The Chef" agreed so we decided what everyone was providing and planned the dinner.

Last night we (Megan Hodge, Omar (Megan's boyfriend), Aury Cruz, AD (Aury's boyfriend), Walter ("The Chef") and I) gathered at my apartment for Thanksgiving dinner. It was a little random but good enough. Turkey, chorizo stuffing, onion risotto, sweet potatoes, spinach w/ pancetta, salad, bread, apple tart, and tiramisu. It actually hit the spot and did feel like a Thanksgiving meal.

Lastly and most importantly I just want to say Thank you. I am so thankful to have to best and most supportive family in the world. Words can't even explain what they mean to me and how blessed I really am. I am also thankful for the incredible friends that I have, and all the opportunities I have been given in life. I should be thankful everyday because I really do have a wonderful life.

World Championships Recap

Because I didn't blog about our last two games in World Championships I thought I would give a little recap. Unfortunately we did not finish as high as we would of hoped. The two losses in the 2nd round led to a difficult match up in the semi-finals against Russia. Their team had an average height of about 6'4"...I felt very short out there on the court. After lossing the first set we came back strong in the 2nd to tie up the match. But the Russian's proved to be a stronger team that day winning the next 2 sets and advancing to the finals.

The tournament wasn't over after that match. We still had a chance to go home with a medal. This game proved to be a tough one as well playing against the home team Japan. It was an up and down match, one set to us, the next to Japan and so on. In the 5th Japan proved to be the digging machines that they are and upset our team to win the Bronze. It was a very hard fought match and unfortunately we came up short. But in the process learned a lot about ourselves and our team and hopefully will return next summer as a better team.

Overall 4th place was not exactly where we wanted to end up, but it was a successful tournament. There were many highlights, a couple low lights, but most importantly a lot of learning that will help us get to our ultimate goal of winning the Gold in 2012. I want to thank Japan for being a great host country and making the month as comfortable as possible. Incredible crowds... Can't wait to be back for World Cup.

Wednesday we battled a tough match against Brazil coming out a little short with a 3-1 loss to them. If we would have won we were automatically in the Final 4. But since we lost...we had to wait for the results of the Cuba/Italy match. Unfortunately that match was the last one of the day...and ended up going 5. If Italy would have won...the deciding factor would have been points and it would have been very close. My Dad being the mathematician that he is...was figuring out the amount of points we needed and what Italy needed throughout the whole match. But...eventually Cuba won and we advanced to the Final 4.

Thursday we traveled on the bullet train from Nagoya to Tokyo. I have been on the bullet train before but every time is a great experience. Comfortable, quiet and fast. I think it took only about an hour and half. We passed Mt. Fuji...supposedly it is difficult to see because there is always snow on it. But it was perfectly clear for us with no snow. It was amazing but too difficult to take a picture from the train. Looked a little bit like this though...

I spent most of the train ride dominating the Monopoly card game and watching an episode of The Event...one of the new TV shows I am getting into. I will post another blog about my other favorites.

Friday was another off day. Had a great practice at the competition gym, a little walking around with Logan, and dinner with my family. It has been so great having them here, I can't even explain it. The more time I can spend with them the better since I will be off to Italy soon for 7 months.

Today we play Russia in the semi-finals. They are undefeated up to this point, and their average height is about 6'5". I might be exaggerating a little but not much. Our team is so happy after a long summer of competition and training to have made it to this match giving us an opportunity to get to the finals. I know I am fired up for this game. I can't even remember the last time I played the Russians. But I think it is a good match up for us...even though they are giants...we are ready to take them down.

Tonight was one of our more crucial wins of the tournament so far. Without tonight's win we would have made it very difficult on ourselves to make it to the top 4. But...we came out on fire and played some good volleyball.

Brazil, Japan, and Russia have already secured three of the four spots. The last spot will go to Italy or us. We have a tough match against Brazil tomorrow and hope to play our best volleyball yet. Time to get some rest...we have a quick turn around.

Sorry for the 2 day break from blogging. Not as easy at this stop for me to be on the computer.
But here is a little update...

We came out strong our first match against Czech Republic. We were prepared for them to come out banging with a lot of confidence after beating Italy, and taking Brazil to 5 in their first pool. With our pre-game preparation and consistent play we were able to control them pretty easily and come out with a 3-0 win improving our record to 4-0 in the 2nd round.

The next day against Italy was a different story. This for sure was our first real test of the tournament. Even though Italy had not played well in the first round we knew they were going to come out tough against us. The Italians are known for their good defense and consistent play and that's exactly what they did against us. Even though we could have won this match, and had many opportunities in the 3rd and 4th with 4 point leads...the Italians continued to fight and dig some amazing balls. Unfortunately we didn't play our best volleyball that night but on the brighter side we still only have one loss. This tournament is a long one, and have two more games that could help us secure a spot in the semi-finals.

I never enjoy losing, but even the best teams lose. Hopefully we will learn from our loss and play better tonight. Italy is now in the past and we have to focus on Netherlands. They have always been a decent team and are coming off a loss as well. We will have to give it our all tonight and fight until the last whistle is blown. I love challenges.

Off the court I have been spending a lot of time with my family. My Mom, Dad, and Grandma made the trip and I am so happy they are here with me. I can confidently say I have one of the best and most supportive families in the world. It is incredible how they are always by my side, and I am so thankful for it.

Time to concentrate for tonight's game. Keep us in your thoughts...we are still in it.

Shoe Obsession

Since we have a couple days off from playing I thought I would blog about my shoe obsession. First of all my preferred volleyball shoe would be the Mizuno Wave Nexus 3. I have been playing in this shoe or a version of this shoe since I joined the national team. It is not a volleyball shoe as much as our sponsor Mizuno tries to get us to wear the volleyball shoe, it is actually a running shoe. My feet feel just right in them and I will probably never change unless they discontinue the shoe...I hope not.

Now on to more exciting shoes. My fetish is at a higher level for off the court shoes. Almost to the point where I could call it a problem...but I will never let it get that far. What a win tonight!!!!! Cuba is always dangerous and they proved that once again tonight. After being down the first set and coming back to win, then having a tight second set and pulling it out...Cuba did exactly the same in the 3rd set. We definitely blew it being up 12-4 or so...but that is Volleyball. Often there will be highs and lows...and when Cuba gets on a roll they really get going. The 4th set we were down again...with a little help from the energy of the bench we came back and pulled off a big win. We ended up 5-0 in our pool, reaching our first goal, and now time to go and get to the Finals.

Tomorrow morning we travel to our next stop Nagoya. There we will take on Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, and Brazil. Germany, Cuba, and Thailand will join us in that pool. Since we beat all three of those teams, we go into the pool with a 3-0 record. Brazil is the only other team with that record. After the four matches we need to be in the top 2 to advance to the semi-finals. It's going to be an exciting one...I can't wait.

Last night we beat Kazakhstan in straight sets. Unfortunately I don't have many highlights or genius commentary from the match. We did what we had to but have yet to reach our highest level of play. But like I said before...in this type of tournament a win is a win and that's what we got. So here are a few pictures from the match and a couple random off court photos. Not only did we get a big 3-0 win over Germany on Sunday...we are now 3-0 in the tournament. Going into Sunday's match we were fully prepared to battle with Germany. They have some talented players on their squad and knew we would have to be disciplined and alert to get the job done. The first two sets were tight...but one thing this team is good at is making the big plays at the right time. I think by the third set we had wore them down with our consistent serving and blocking. Another positive to this win was everyone was not on their A game...in a way that sounds like a negative...but in reality players can't always have a perfect match. If our team continues to be able to beat strong teams like Germany 3-0 when not everything is clicking...I would say we have a very good chance of doing big things. But for now we will concentrate on tomorrow's game against Kazakhstan.

Today (Monday) we had the day off from games. The team got in a quality practice at lunch time and the rest of the day off until video. Logan and I took a walk around the city (Matsumoto). Finally it was a beautiful day and it was time for me to get out of the hotel since I had been spending most of my free time doing therapy and watching movies. On our little adventure she took me to a big department store, Starbucks, and the grocery store. Both her and I love Japanese food so we picked up dinner at the grocery store which had little stands of different types of Japanese food. But my favorite part of the trip was finding these little faces that expressed so much. I will find a special spot for them in my loft.

These little faces are all handmade...each one different with a unique expression. But what is so fabulous about these little guys is the message that is on the box. Although the translation from Japanese to English was a little sketchy...the overall message was great. In short...express and share...life is too short to hold your feelings in.

On that note...I want to thank everyone that had supported me through my career. I write this blog for my friends and family that I am far away from, and the fans that do support me in a positive way. It has been brought to my attention that I am not a fan favorite off the court. I take that a little to heart because I make a real effort to respond to all messages and mail that I receive as long as it is positive. If I have done anything to offend anyone or turn them off I sincerely apologize. I will continue to do my blog for myself and ones that enjoy it. I can't promise that it will always be about volleyball because I have many other interests, but I will always try to keep you updated.

2 down...big win over Croatia

Today we played the first match of the day. Always a little difficult because normal pre-game routine is altered a little bit. But not enough to stop us. After a long warm-up we came out a lot stronger then the day before. One of the keys to our victory was our serving. Against Thailand we made a lot of errors and today was the exact opposite. We served aggressive yet controlled and got Croatia out of system making the game a lot easier on us.

I'm back...

After taking the summer off from blogging I am finally back. I have so much to share about my summer from what I did all summer to new fashion finds. But for the next 16 days I will be blogging about World Championships.

I took most of the summer off from USA Volleyball trying to get my knee and body in better shape to make a run for the 2012 Olympics. About 2 months ago I got back in the gym with the USA Team and competed my way back onto the roster. Now after a long and hard summer I am here in Japan with the team for my first World Championships. I know it is hard to believe that it is my first...but it is. It was the only big tournament I was missing on my resume, and I am so happy to be here helping the team.

We traveled to Japan on the 21st of October to get acclimated and train for a week before the tournament started. We had a great training week in Shinga the home of the Japanese club team Toray Arrows. The organization was so wonderful to host us in their city and gym for 6 days. Thank you to the Toray Arrows.

After a 5 hours bus ride we arrived in Matsumoto on Wednesday. Had a short practice on Thursday in the competition gym, watched a good amount of video, and rested up for today. We took the court today against Thailand for our first game. After a slow start we pulled out a 3-1 win. World Championships is a very long and difficult tournament. A win is a win and that's all that matters. Now it's time to look ahead to Croatia tomorrow.

Most of the games are being streamed online. Problem is the site changes but I will try to update you as soon as I know. You can always follow the tournament on fivb.com for all the results, stats, and pictures.

Once again I took a little break from blogging...but I'm back to give a little update. After winning Coppa Italia, 3 days later we started playoffs. In the quater-finals we were matched up with Pavia. We were all very tired from Coppa Italia, but fought hard and were able to win the series in 2 straight matches.

We were the only quarterfinal to be finished after two games. We really needed that rest because we knew the semi-finals was going to be a tough one. Bergamo ended up beating Perugia in 3 matches, so it was time to play Bergamo. Bergamo is a always a very experienced team with a lot of Italian National Team members. We beat them in 5 sets to win Coppa Italia, so we knew this was going to be a long series.

I get tired looking at those scores. It was a battle...and we came out on top to make it to my first ever final appearance here in Italy. Pesaro had closed their series against Jesi the night before. So now it was time to forget about our big win in the semi-finals and concentrate on Pesaro.

It is always an interesting experience going back to Pesaro after playing there for my first 3 years in Italy. The fans have become quite aggressive these days...but I guess people can say that about me on the volleyball court. They are just doing their job. Tomorrow we will fight once again and try to tie up the series before heading back North.

Coppa Italia

Finally this past weekend we got to play again. It was time for the Final 4 of Coppa Italia (Italian Cup). The Italians take this Cup very seriously and they have it for every sport. We practiced hard for two and a half weeks preparing for this weekend. First up in the semi-finals we had Jesi (Heather Bown's team). We came up with a big 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-15) win, and some confidence going into the final against Bergamo. Bergamo just the other week won Champions League, which is the Cup for all of Europe. We knew we had our work cut out for us. We started the match off great with a 2-0 set lead and 16-11 lead in the 3rd...then...well something happened and we ended up in the 5th set. But with the hard work of our team and coach we pulled out the victory (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 15-13). This was my first time winning Coppa Italia, and also the first for our organization. It was absolutely incredible. The support from our organization, staff, and fans was tremendous.

As I previously said...we had 2 weekends off from games. The 2nd weekend I had Sunday off...and Manu and I decided to go for a late lunch in Milan at our friend the Pharmacist's restaurant. We ended up staying there for at least 4 hours enjoying great food and great company. Then spontaneously I brought up going bowling...and all were for it.

Easter Spa weekend...

One plus of having 3 weeks off from games was having Easter weekend off. I was having a very difficult time deciding if I should travel out of Italy, go to Rome, or just stay around Milan and relax. Luckily one of my best friends from Hawaii made my decision a lot easier. My friend Erica Lum and I grew up together in Hawaii. She has now been living in Italy for the past years with her fiance Phil Martin who plays professional basketball here. It worked out that Phil had a game close to where I live. Erica decided to fly up the morning of his game so we could spend some time together. I decided to surprise her with a spa day in my new favorite hotel in Milan. After the spa day we went to Phil's game, had a great dinner, and then Easter brunch the next day before she left. I had another day and a half off after that but chose to just relax in the hotel and have some Me time.

Volley Update

Regular season finally ended two Sundays ago with a big win against our rival Busto Arsizio. In our first match up against them which here they call "The Derby" we lost in 5...but this time we weren't messing around and smashed them in 3.

It was a great way to wrap up the regular season and secure 2nd place going into playoffs. It's also nice to see my coach, the organization, the sponsors, and all of our fans so happy. We truly have the best fans in the league.

Now we are on about a 3 week break...actually now only 2 weeks left before we play in the Final 4 of Coppa Italia. It is the Italian Cup that the Italians take very seriously and is a very big deal to win. We play Jesi in the semi-finals on Saturday the 17th. Until then we have been and will continue to work hard in the weight room and with the ball to be in the best shape we can going into Coppa Italia and the Playoffs.

Can't wait for our next game...games are so much more fun then practice...

Last week we took down Pavia in an impressive 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-15) win giving us a great deal of confidence leading into this Sunday's game against Busto. Going into this final regular season game, we are in 2nd place, and need to come out with a victory to hold that position for playoffs. In our first match against them, we lost a 5 set thriller. So...we are looking for revenge.

So I haven't blogged since last week...guess why...we lost. On Sunday we had a tough loss to Jesi. Yes Jesi is a very good team, and had one of their best games this season...but...we still could have won and taken over 1st place. But in the big picture...better to lose now then in the future. My Olympic teammate Heather Bown had a great game and led her team to victory. It's always fun to see my American friends and teammates. Hopefully we will bounce back this weekend against Pavia. We still have a chance to take over 1st...but we just need to take one game at a time and play our game.

My first Football game

Two sundays ago I got to go to my first football game...not american football...but as we call it in the states...soccer game. Its amazing how we are the only ones that call it soccer, and it's amazing how the people in the states hardly care about the sport and it is the #1 sport in the world. Well...I got the opportunity to finally see why it is the most popular sport in the world. Ronaldhino was absolutely incredible...Beckham wasn't bad for the eyes...and the whole experience was one to remember.

Unfortunately I have been slacking once again on the updates. Fortunately I have a lot to report...and all good news. Two sundays ago we went on the road to Piacenza. This team started out the season a little slow but were on a 3 game winning streak and were trying to get their 4th win against us. We knew it was going to be a tough one...but luckily we pulled it out in 4 and got another W and 3 points added to our total.

And by looking at the scores it was not an easy one. I was physically and mentally exhausted after that game...but was already looking ahead to our big match against the number 1 team Pesaro...and I'm sure now you want to know what happened with that one...

Well...after a very long week of practice (we started on monday instead of tuesday) Sunday finally came around and we felt very prepared for the big #1 vs #2 game. In general for me every game is important and I try to play every game like it is the finals. But this game really felt like a big one for many reasons. The first reason already being stated, the 2nd reason is my Mom and Dad flew into town on Saturday and they are always with me for big games (ex. Gold Medal Match in Beijing 2008). Along with having my Mom and Dad in town, my old friend Lindsay Kagawa & soon to be my agent was in attendance for the big match.

As we ran in to the gym to start our warm up...I was greeted by this huge sign done by my fans.

I have to be honest...to have that kind of support feels amazing. Thank you to the fans of Villa Cortese. Unfortunately...somehow my father failed to see the sign the whole match. He said he was too concentrated on the game...good thing we have some pictures.

As I said before...my team felt very prepared for the game and we went out there and proved just that. Other then a little lapse in the 3rd set...it might have been one of our best performances.

After the game I was awarded MVP, and received a glass platter that weighs about 40 pounds...how I will get that home will be determined. I was happy with my performance, and always happy when my parents get to see some good volleyball...hopefully next game they will see the same.

As I said in a previous blog...my girlfriend Iza was here last week to visit me. I hadn't seen her since right after the Olympics. A little history on Iza and I...we met while both living in downtown LA in 2006. Ever since then we have kept in touch...and made attempts to visit when we could. This past Monday was Manuela Secolo's (my teammate) birthday. We decided to celebrate on Sunday night with a great dinner at the Pharmacist's Premiata restaurant with a small group of friends, and continued the night at our favorite bar Ganas. The night was filled with a lot of eating, drinking, dancing, and laughing. Most importantly Manu had a great time and even at one point in the night she told me it was her best Birthday ever...that made my night. Here are a couple PG-13 pictures...

Going into Sunday's match we were looking for revenge. Urbino beat us in the first round 3-0 at their house...and we were ready to get those 3 points back. We felt confident going into the match but knew it was going to be a difficult one. There is no doubt that Urbino can play some good volleyball. After stealing the first set, and having a let down in the second, it was 1-1 going into the third. That is when we took control and started to play...I'm going to call it the Villa Standard. Finally our team has developed our standard...and we are going to do our best to not drop below it. Great win for us on Sunday...

On Sunday we played Novara once again. The 4th time this season and the 3rd time in 20 days. We came out on fire, playing the best we ever had winning the first 2 sets easily. Then Novara decided to turn themselves around and we got a little too relaxed loosing the 3rd set, and were down in the 4th. Luckily with some heart and determination we can back in the 4th to win the match.

I think we have played then enough this season and hopefully won't match up with them in playoffs. But the one good thing about playing them is I get to see two of my good friends...Logan and Vally. But I rather see then at dinner then on the other side of the net.

I have a new favorite Italian restaurant in Milan thanks to my teammate Manuela Secolo. Manu and I have had a wonderful time getting to know each other this season, and she has also introduced me to some of her amazing friends. Normally I tend to hang out with my teammates, Americans, and a select few Italians. But this year I have met some new great people that really know the meaning of friendship, and genuinely care. Gas, Bianchi, and Francesco (The Pharmacist is his nickname) are my new 3 friends. The Pharmacist is the owner of this fabulous establishment. Everything is wonderful, the pizza, pasta, meat, wine, dessert...you can't go wrong at this place. Now it is one of the places I walk in and an instant smile is on my face. Last week was one of my teammates birthday. We decided to surprise her with a little party. I was in charge of getting her to the restaurant. First of all I am a horrible liar. Luckily I came up with a story that was some what believable. The other hard part was we had to get her lil one (Nikola) and friend (Ivana) to the place as well. So I had to stall and take the longest route possible to the restaurant while Manu got the others there. My team is on a roll. Sunday we got another win against Castellana Grotte.It was a team the we were supposed to beat but as far as I'm concerned in the Italian league anyone can win on any given night.

But with the win we earned 2 days off. I decided to spend the night in Milano after having a great dinner with some of my teammates. I had finally found a restaurant that served American style breakfast and I wanted to try it out Monday morning. The place is called California Bakery...absolutely amazing...loved it.

This place is such a find for me and I can't believe I didn't know about it before. I can't wait to go back...I was even thinking some time this week. To top my wonderful Monday off I had a nice relaxing massage across the street from my house. I must say Italians do massages a little differently then Americans and at times I do feel a little uncomfortable...but in the end it was needed for my body to recover and prepare for the week.

It has been forever I know. Almost a month and a half to be exact. A lot went on in the month...a couple losses, a couple wins, a trip back to LA, many nights out in Milan, and much more. But I can officially say I am ready to get back into this blogging business. Here is a little volleyball update. We ended with first round of the season unfortunately with a tough loss to our rival Busto Arsizio. I say our rival because our 2 cities are only about 10 min away from each other...and I actually live in Busto. But that loss is now is the far past but here is the score just in case you were interested.

Villa Cortese vs. Busto Arsizio 26-28, 27-29, 25-20, 25-21, 14-16

As you can see we let that one get away from us. But we have learned and moved on. After that match I got to leave the next day for a week in LA. It was great to get back and to see the progress on my new place. Unfortunately things were moving very slow. But at least I can now say that things are almost done and everything planned will be complete this month. Or next match was in the next week and we knew it was going to be a tough one. And it sure ended up being one...we picked up another loss and this one was ugly.

Nothing much to say about this one. Perugia is a strong team and it is very difficult to play in their game...but no excuses...we played horrible. These two losses caused a little drama on the team but it wouldn't be a normal Italian season without a little drama. Luckily it passed quickly and got back on the winning track.

At the time were were tied with Bergamo for 2nd place so it was a great win to put us apart from them. Next up was the first match of the quarterfinals of Coppa Italia. Coppa Italia is a big deal here in Italy. After the first round of the season the top 8 teams compete for the Coppa Italia title. Coming out of the first round in 2nd place we ended up matching up with Novara (Logan Tom's team). The first match was to be played at Novara and the following week we would play my team's gym.

After a rough start in the first set my team really turned it on. One of our best matches for sure. And gave us a good opportunity to advance to the final 4. Before we played Novara for the second time we had to travel to play Conegliano (Sarah Pava, and Makare Wilson's team). I had never been to that city and was excited to play in a new gym that was very nice and filled with a great volleyball crowd. A great city to play in.

Once again we played a great match with a little scare in the 2nd set, but it showed how strong and patient we were. Great team effort once again. It was time to play Novara again to go to the Final 4 of Coppa Italia. We needed to win 2 sets to advance. We started the match off on fire winning the first set easily. Also in the 2nd set we were in control until Logan went back and served about 8-10 balls and brought her team back. But after that it was all Villa Cortese. Taking the 3rd set to go to the Final 4 and eventually winning the match.

It is a pretty big deal for our team to qualify for the Final 4...and also means bonus time for me...not that that matters at all.

Sunday Castellana Grotte travels to our house for another match. Right now we are sitting alone in 2nd place behind Pesaro. We are going to continue to take one match at a time and continue to get better as a team each day in the gym.

One of the perks of being a professional volleyball player is you get to travel all around the world. One of the negatives is you miss all sorts of important and special events like Christmas with the family. Luckily I have one of my close friends Logan close to me. Last night we were able to pull off a win even though we played some ugly volleyball. After 2 very close close sets luckily my team and I pulled it together and came back to get that win. Unfortunately by going 5 we only got 2 points and are now tied for 1st with Pesaro instead of being alone at the top. We have one more big game before I get to go back to LA for 5 days. There is lots of talk about this next game because it is considered a derby since the other city is 10 min from our city and is actually the city I live in.

A little less then a month ago my Mom and Grandma (Nonna in Italian) aka Lala visited me in Italy for about 10 days. They always visit me at least once every year in Italy. This year they got to see a new little city (Busto Arsizio...where I live but do not play) and spend some time in Milan. We spent Thanksgiving at the Westin Palace in Milan. Had a great dinner...not exactly like the real deal Thanksgiving meal...but I can't complain. Lala, my Mom, Logan and I had a fabulous night appreciating family and friends. Villa Cortese vs. Pesaro 25-22, 14-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-12

Pesaro is one on my ex's. I spent my first 3 years in Italy in Pesaro. It is a great little city and I had wonderful years there. But it was definitely time to move on when I did, but I appreciate the time I spent there and all the great people I met in Pesaro. This game was going to be a challenge...playing again without one of our star players. But the team came together, played with heart and never game up and came out with a huge win. Felt great getting another w...Next up was Heather Bown's (Olympic teammate/friend) team Jesi.

Going into this game we were in 2nd place and Jesi was 1 point ahead of us in first. In all of my years in Italy, Jesi has always had a strong team. We knew we had to play some good volleyball to pull out a win. It was great having Tai Aguero back playing, and we were playing for 1st place, and a possible 3 days off. We didn't play our best but it was good enough. Another win and 3 days of relaxation...what else could we ask for. Next up Pavia...

Season Update

I have played 3 games since I got back from my mini vacation. They were all tough for different reasons. We game out 2-1 and really should have been 3-0 but better to get that loss out of the way.

Villa Cortese vs. Novara 25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 17-25, 15-13

This was an intense game. First of all after having almost 3 weeks off from games it is always going to be difficult to play in the first one. Second there was a lot of talk going on in the newspapers, our organization to their organization and it was getting ugly. Third I was playing against 2 of my best friends, Vally and Logan. Logan had a great game like always and Vally came in off the bench a help a lot. Personally I didn't have my best game but I guess it was enough to pull off a big win. I think it help having my mom and grandma there for the support. Also it was great to see my Italian family... Vally's parents and brother.

I rather not talk about this one. Lets just say it was one of those games where nothing went right. But Urbino is a strong team and they have beat 3 of the top teams this season...but we still should have won this game and that is all I will say. We will get then next time.

We started off slow...playing without one of our best players. But actually picked it up and ended up playing one of our lowest error matches. The whole team really contributed and it was a good opportunity for our team to gain confidence going into our next match.

I got back to Minneapolis on Thursday ready for a great dinner with 2 of my great friends. I met Laura and Kat at the new restaurant in the warehouse district of Minneapolis. It is called Bar La Grassa. Ofcourse now that I'm living in Italy again all I wanted to do was eat Italian when I was in the States..not really...but I couldn't pass up trying the new restaurant in the city. Friday I had a lot to do. First stop ARP wave clinic where I did most of my knee rehab this past year. Good to see Phil who helped me a lot and got some other ideas on how to stay healthy. Next stop Mall of America. I can't go to Minneapolis and not visit my friends at Nordstroms. I had a great shopping day but fortunately didn't buy too much. Here is one great piece that I did get...

After a long day it was time to get ready for the Gopher Volleyball game. I was excited to see the girls in action since I was the volunteer coach for them last spring. I was also very excited to see my old teammate and great friend Nicole Branagh along with some other MN alums. Nicole went to the Beijing Olympics as well but played on the beach...here she is in action.

After the first set...Nicole and I were surprised with a...can you guys go to the center of the court and be introduced? I had no idea this was going to happen...and of course I was dressed in one of my high fashion, out there outfits. Over the knee report signature boots, american apparel leather leggings, Maison Martin Margiela shirt, mike & chris leather jacket, and Louis Vuitton camo scarf...it was quite an outfit, and the MN volleyball crowd was not prepared for it. Luckily we were out there for only about 2 embarrassing minutes. The ladies pulled out a quick win...which I enjoyed since I don't normally like to watch volleyball on my time off. The team and alums gathered in the team room after...it was great seeing everyone. And thanks to Jenna, Kat and Paz for being my support group at the game.

After the game Jenna and I met my good friends Quincy and JB at JD Hoyts. Another favorite of mine in the city...you have to get a buddy bowl with catfish...incredible. Turned out to be a great night. I had to get a little rest for the big tailgating in the morning with Jenna and the crew for the Gopher football game.

It was my first time seeing the new Gopher football stadium finished. I was lucky my flight didn't leave until 3 so I got to partake in the fun tailgating festivities and see half of the game. On the menu for tailgating was a Thanksgiving feast. I was very excited about this cause I didn't know if I was going to have turkey on Thanksgiving. Great food, and drinks and now it was game time. I might have officially been named the "Worst Blogger Out There"... and I completely deserve it. But I'm back and going for the "Best Comeback" award this time. A lot has happened in the last 3 weeks since I last blogged. More non-volleyball then volleyball related things.

First I will get the volleyball out of the way. Our last game was actually now almost 3 weeks ago. We had to travel down South...the only team that far South. Luckily we got to fly which is always an exciting experience especially when you are flying the discount airline easyjet. Yep if you ever fly easyjet be prepared for a push fest to get the best seat possible because it is first come first serve...yep no seat assignments. After an interesting flight, and an interesting ride in little buses to the hotel we finally got there. Going into this game we were 2-1 with 7 points. Our coach told us if after 4 games we had a total of 10 points we could have 7 days off. After getting the big win over Conegliano I was confident going into this match and booked a ticket home to the states knowing this would be my only opportunity all season. Good thing my team was on a roll and we rolled right through Castellana Grotte as well 3-0 and I was on my way back to the states.

The following day (Monday) I went back to Milan with the team and from there continued on to the states. I decided to break my trip up a little so the travel wouldn't be as difficult on me and I would get to see some friends that I hadn't seen for a while. I stopped in Minneapolis Monday night. My dear friend Laura Bush (assistant vball coach @ U of Minn.) picked me up and off we went. We stopped by my hotel...Aloft Minneapolis...for a quick change. This was my first time staying at this hotel. I always was interested in it...here are some pics. Very simple, modern, and inexpensive...

After putting on my Bopbasics black off-the-shoulder cashmere sweater, Alice & Olivia black baggy shorts, and my over-the-knee Report Signature Fairfax boots we were off to one of my favorite restaurants in the city 112 eatery. Ofourse I wish I took pictures of my outfits for you...but I really do hate pictures...but I might start.

I had to mix in a couple new dishes with my favorites. My other friend Kat joined us for some wine and at the end of the meal Vera joined us to go out on the town for a little bit. We ended our night at Envy Nightclub with a bunch of other friends that met us there...a great night. But I had to be up early to catch a flight to LA.

I slept the whole flight knowing I had a big day ahead of me. My dad was picking me up at the airport with my car and then my mom was meeting us at my loft to see the progress. While I have been gone for the last month I have been doing some additions and decorating my loft. This was the main reason I traveled all the way back to LA was to check on it and make final decisions. It was great seeing my parents even though it was a short visit. But I will take whatever I can get, especially since this trip was unexpected.

Also at my loft was my friend/designer Breanna who flew in town from NY to finalize everything for my loft. I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't much change, I really wanted to walk in a see a different loft. But I now understand things like this take a lot of time and money might I add. I can't wait to post pics when it is all finished.

Along with loft decisions I got to see one of my best friends Kim Glass before she was off to the Czech Republic to play. Tuesday we had a great dinner @ one of our favs...Katsuya Hollywood. Nothing like good watermelon mojitos, crispy rice w/ spicy tuna, and miso black cod. Oh and did I mention great company. Kim introduced me to two of her good friends...DouggieFresh & Cleveland...love those guys. After we headed to MyHouse...not really my house but a club in Hollywood called MyHouse. Couldn't ask for a better first night back in LA.

The following 2 days were filled with errands and decisions for the loft, a quick trip to Anaheim to see the National team girls and coaches that are working hard in the gym, and lots of running around. Luckily I was able to get everything done that I wanted to, and even got to slip in another great dinner with KG at the new Hollywood restaurant Philippe.

I love the black, white and red theme. I can't remember all that we ate because we tried so many things. But I do recommend it. It was another memorable experience with KG. Great food, atmostphere, conversation, and even a greeting from Lionel Richie (one of my favorites), and Randy Jackson (Judge on American Idol). Can't wait for another dinner with KG.

The next day (Thursday) I was off to Minneapolis again to catch a Gopher Volleyball & Football game, have a couple fabulous dinners with friends, and spend my last days in the States.

Big Time Win

Finally we are playing like our team should be. Can we still get better? Of course we can...but last night we played some real good volleyball. We were up against a dangerous, Russian-like team by the name of Conegliano. I say Russian-like because they were giant. In their previous 2 matches they had a total of 38 blocks...pretty unheard of. With only a little time to prepare for this match after our loss to Bergamo, we spent a lot of time watching video as a team, and surprisingly I watched some by myself. I knew that my job as a setter was going to be difficult playing against such a good blocking team, and I wanted to be prepared to give my hitters the best chance they could.

We came out on fire, serving tough, blocking well, and hitting past their enormous block. I felt in such a great rhythm I was able to give my hitters the best opportunity for a kill. They only had 6 blocks all match...normally they have 6 a set. Other then a slight run by them in the end of the 2nd set...we dominated the match. It felt great...and even better we got 3 points...now just 3 points away from a week off.

A little over a month ago I was in Puerto Rico playing in the NORCECA Championships with the USA National Team. After the tournament I was approached by a dear little girl, Alejandra Torres. She asked me for a jersey or a shirt and I felt so bad I had nothing with me at the time. I told her to give me her address and I would send her a signed jersey. If I tell someone I'm going to do something you better believe I will. Here is little miss lady with my jersey.

Tough Loss to Bergamo

Sunday my team matched up against the strong Italian Club Bergamo. This team has a winning tradition and has been playing together for many years. We knew we had our work cut out for us. The city of Bergamo is only about an hour away on the bus, so we left the day of. I like to practice in the gym that we are playing in because it is always different for setters. Lights, background, how the ball travels, and so on. But since we left the day of there was no practicing in the gym. We got to Bergamo really early so we took a little stroll of the city. Bergamo is absolutely gorgeous, and a fun fact is it is split into two. The low city is filled with classic modern buildings, wide roads, and shopping. The high city is a medieval walled village overlooking the Lombardia countryside, and you can take a cable car to get there. I would love to explore Bergamo a little more...

Back to volleyball. So we were at the gym really early and very anxious to play. We started out slow but ended up pulling out the first game 26-24. Bergamo then took control of us in games 2 & 3. We fought back with a great game 4 and hoped it would carry on to game 5. Unfortunately Bergamo's passing was incredible and they got out to an early lead and pulled out the win. Luckily our championship is on a point system. If you win 3-0 or 3-1 you get 3 points, and the looser gets nothing. If you win 3-2 you get 2 points and the looser gets 1. So we ended up getting 1 point, still making it possible for me to maybe go home for a week.

After waiting and hour for 2 of my teammates to get drug tested we returned to Villa Cortese. Logan (friend & National Team teammate) played her match in Piacienza which was not far either. We decided to meet each other in Milan for a nice Mexican dinner. We had a great time, saw some other friends, ate good food, and listened to good music. After dinner with both went home to prepare for our next match which was on Wednesday.

Overall it was a successful Sunday. Even though we didn't win, we still got a point off of Bergamo which is good, and we continued to grow as a team...next up Conegliano.

This week has been an interesting one. One day we practiced with 5 people thanks to the flu or should I say febre (fever in Italian) that is what they call it. My teammates have been in and out of practice while i have been trying not to get sick. Today I wasn't feeling so hot, but still managed to practice and make it through. Today was also the first day everyone was well enough to practice...2 days before our 2nd big game. Sunday we play Bergamo, a team that is always in the top 4 and probably has the most championships under their belt. A 4pm game on tv...that is always fun. Hopefully by Sunday everyone will be feeling their best and we can come out with another big win. We have 3 more games before we go on a little break for Grand Champions Cup. Right now we have 3 out of 3 points...supposedly if we get 10 out of 12 points after these 4 first games we get a week off. USA here I come...

There is only one reason why I made it past my first in Italy...and that is because of my dear friend Valeria Rosso. She took me in my first year like she had known me forever. She translated for me, took me places, went out with me, listened when I was homesick, did everything for me. A very special person, unlike anyone I have every met. Touches lives, and makes people smile daily. Motivated, inspiring, and gifted. I love you Vally.

Back at it...Finally

Last Sunday was our first game. Really I had no idea how it was going to go. I was still getting in my own groove and adjusting, and the other Italians had just joined the team after winning the European Championship. We had practiced a total of 5 days together before the match and it wasn't an easy team that we were up against. I have to say it showed that we hadn't played together long. But we did pull out a big win, and saw some spurts of how good of a team we can actually be.

It was a great feeling after we won the match, and definitely a relief since it was so close. I forgot how excited the fans, coaches, and sponsors get after the match. I missed that this past year not playing. After the celebration I was awarded Player of the Game. They gave me a fabulous clock which I will NOT be putting up in my new loft in LA. What happened to cash bonuses??? Check it out...and yes that is my lovely couch it is rested on...I don't spend much time there.

There were some surprises in the other games. Big teams such and Novara (my old team who now has Logan Tom), and Pesaro (my first team for 3 years) lost in 3. And Bergamo and Jesi (Heather Bown's team) got challenged in 5 set matches. It shows that this year the league is very even and there will be no easy matches.

In social life news...Last week I got to see my friend Meika Wagner, volleyball player and an up and coming designer...when I have my store she will be featured in it. I have also been able to do many great dinners with Logan and my Italian girlfriend Vally. Poretti (my fav restaurant in Novara, Nobu (twice, including a 150 euro lunch), Origami (for Vally's Birthday celebration), and Ganas (my fav Sunday night mexican/hip hop hang out). It is great having them so close and being able to get out of the house. Logan and I spent the day in Milan on Monday, where we had our very expensive lunch at Nobu. I told Logan it was because she had 5 cups of tea...she didn't buy it. Then we went shopping, unfortunately or fortunately my credit card was acting up since I didn't tell them I would be in Italy so I ended up not buying anything. But this is what I was about to buy....

They will be there next time...But I had a great time watching Logan spend money and just being away from Volleyball. Many more shopping days to come...

I know I have not blogged for now more then 2 weeks...I'm sorry. Once we finished NORCECAs, and by the way we finished 4th, a slightly disappointing finish, I got back to LA with a ton to do before I moved to Italy. I have now been here for a little less then 2 weeks and just starting to adjust. On the positive side of things, I love it here. When I arrived everything was pretty much ready for me. My little house is great...pics coming soon. My car was waiting for me the next day, and soon after I got my dryer which I can't live without. Once again, I tried to use the washer and the dryer at the same time thinking this house would be able to handle it...but the lights went off. Just something that happens in Europe, can't use too much electricity.

My team on paper is great, and hopefully as a team we will be just as good. We all got together on Tuesday, and we play our first real game on Sunday. Practices have been going great and hopefully we will have enough together to pull out a win on Sunday.

This year I am playing for the city of Villa Cortese, but I am living in the city of Busto Arsizio which is about 10 minutes from the gym we play in. Also I am only about 30 minutes from my old city of Novara. My best Italian friend, Vally Rosso, is playing in Novara along with one of my dear friends Logan Tom. I have been to dinner with them 3 times and it is great to see them so much and have an outlet from my team. Sunday after the game Logan and I plan on going to Milan to eat some Mexican food and spend the night there to do some shopping the following day. Life is good.

Just wanted to give you a little update...more to come soon. I will be blogging regularly from now on...I promise. Hope all is well. Miss everyone in the States...

Quarterfinal Update

USA vs. Canada 17-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-21

It was a rough start for us today. Canada came out blocking, and digging like they have never before and we just couldn't get on a roll. Luckily we had some players that could come in and change the momentum. With a couple substitutions, and Canada going back to normal Canada, we got back on track to pull out the quarterfinal match. Tomorrow we match up against the young and athletic Dominican team in the semifinals. It should be a good one.

USA vs Costa Rica 25-7, 25-10, 25-13

Finally we played how we should play against weaker teams. We got in there starting strong and never looked back. It was a complete team effort, everyone got to play and kept the level up no matter who was on the floor. I continued my strong serving minus one to the bleachers...had to wake up the crowd for a second. Tomorrow we play Canada in the quarterfinals. They are always a steady team and we will have to be on top of things to come out ahead.

The process continues...enjoying every moment of it.

Today is my sister's birthday. I wish I could be in North Carolina with the rest of my family to celebrate it with her, but I know they all rather me be here in Puerto Rico playing volleyball. For all of you that don't know my sister...she is an incredible person. I have looked up to her my whole life even though she probably never knew it. She led the way in volleyball and life, and is one of my biggest supporters in all that I do. She is a gifted volleyball player and coach, and in the last 3 years has become an incredible mother. I hope to be just like her when I grow up. I miss her with all my heart and hope to be in North Carolina with her soon. I know she much rather me post pictures of her kids then her...so here are Lexi and Noa. Look at those lil suckers.

Tough Loss

USA vs Cuba 25-19, 25-16, 16-25, 26-28, 10-15

Tonight we had a tough loss against Cuba. We came out fighting and managing the game well winning the first 2 sets pretty easily. But The Cubans never back down. They came back banging their jumps serves, hitting high over our block, and coming up with some spectacular plays. We finally got our act together in the end of the 4 leading 22-20. Unfortunately we made some unforced errors to let then back in the set and ultimately gave it up. The 5th set is always tough after loosing a close one. Cuba jumped out early and we just couldn't catch up. Overall, we had some great things going on, and obviously have a lot to learn. Every chance we get to play is an opportunity to get better and continue the learning process. It is great to be put in tough situations as this one and I am positive we will continue to learn from our mistakes and build off of our progress.

On a positive note, my old friend Jorge Alifonso (who played at University of Hawaii) was able to be at the match. I got to catch up with him a little, remembering some great times in Hawaii. It is just great when you can go for years without seeing a good friend and pick up right from where you left off. Great friends are hard to come by these days, and I am blessed to have some fabulous ones in my life. Thanks Jorge for making my day.

I am so excited for fall. Sounds weird since I am from Hawaii, and cold weather should scare me...but after all my travels and new found (well not so new) love for fashion I can't wait to wear fall clothes. I got a little head start and purchased a new pair of boots...one of the trends for the season.They are not just any pair of boots...they are one of the top five Heavy Hardwear Booties featured in a recent post by Who What Wear daily...a very popular fashion site out there. And even better I had purchased them about 2 weeks before that top 5 came out...maybe I do know what I'm talking bout. Here is my new favorite addition to my shoe collection. I have worn them with a dress, liquid leggings, and white skinny jeans. I have even gotten compliments from random girls...and girls don't do that ofter. One word...FIERCE

National Team Update

Today was the first day of NORCECA Championships. Luckily this year it is in Puerto Rico...not a bad place to spend a week. But I must say it is raining and very humid...feels like Hawaii in a way so I am right at home. Last night we had the pleasure of going to the opening dinner. It was quite a production...a band, the Puerto Rican captain (and soon to be teammate) being introduced on a little tug boat in a fake river, fireworks, a rock museum, dinner where they ran out of chicken after the Cubans took it all, and a close brawl with the Dominican team to get on the bus home first. Luckily the night finally ended and we made it back to the hotel safely after the longest 4 hours of our life. But thank you to the Puerto Rican Federation for caring so much.

We played Mexico today. A very young, scrappy, and energetic team that had one girl that would whistle so loud before, during, and after the play that my ears are still ringing. We started very slow but eventually got our game together and came out with a 3-0 win.

Tomorrow we have our toughest pool play match against Cuba. They have only 4 returning Olympians on this trip, but will still be banging jump serves and hitting on the 10 ft. line. It will be an exciting match. Hopefully we will come out stronger then we did today.

Fashion Week in New York

One of the most fabulous weeks in New York is...Fashion Week. I will one day make it there...I will just have to be done with volleyball. It is so fun to see all the stars get dressed up for the big event, and it is also exciting to see the innovative designs from all of the classic and up and coming designers. This fashion week is dedicated to Spring of 2010. Isn't it crazy that we are just getting into fall and they are already showing Spring 2010? She's back...National Team Update

Finally after a year of rehab it was time for me to step back on the court. After the team returned from World Grand Prix, it was time for me to start competing for a spot. I landed a spot on the roster for the Final 4 tournament in Lima, Peru. We arrived here on Monday the 7th after a long day of travel. I forgot after a year how this life was. We immediately got to our rooms and changed for practice. One of the things that I have to admit I did not miss. Luckily I wore thigh high compression socks on the airplane so I wouldn't swell. It was a short practice but I always feel better after. Competition started on the 9th and right away we had the Beijing Gold Medalist...Brazil.

All I can say is it wasn't a great 1st appearance back on the court for me. You would think that practice would prepare me...not at all. It was rough, but I am very hard on myself and I think that ultimately makes me the player that I am. We ended up loosing a close one in 5.

Next up we had the host Peru. The gym was packed and Peru was ready to play us. Too bad for them we came out firing in game 1. Game 2 was a close one, Peru got hot and we just could catch up. Fortunately in game 3 and 4 we settled down and played USA volleyball coming out with a victory.

Our final pool play game was our fellow NORCECA rival the Dominican Republic. They are a very young athletic team that has the potential to be very good. Hugh (my coach) decided to rest Heather Bown, Nancy Metcalf, and I knowing that we would face the Dominican again the following day. The Dominican came out strong and finished strong. We unfortunately were flat and never really got it rolling until the 3rd set, but too late to make a comeback.

Like I said before, no matter what, we would face the Dominicans in the semifinals. This time it would be a different story. We had a great passing practice in the morning, and did a thorough video session on them. Going into the match we were very confident that it was going to be better then the first one. Luckily personal game decided to come back at the right time. The team played great. We were finally playing some good volleyball.

Tomorrow we get another shot at Brazil in the finals. I think we have a great chance. We have already improved so much on this trip alone. But we are definitely tired. 5 games is a row is no joke.

3 day trip to Italy

I fought real hard not to make this trip. Anyone else would think I am crazy...you mean you don't want to go to Italy??? Yes I want to go to Italy, but not for 3 days, and for a doctor's visit. Well that is what I was thinking before I got here. But now that my trip is almost over my thoughts have changed. The main reason I came here was to meet my new Italian team, Villa Cortese, and to pass a doctor's physical because they were nervous about my knee.

After about 16 hours of travel, my president, Gian Carlo and vice president, Carlo picked me up. It was funny when I walked out of baggage claim...they didn't recognize me but I knew who they were. Doesn't surprise me they have probably only seen me in a uniform...and I must admit I look quite different especially with my big shades on. They were impressed with my Italian...I really don't know why it was pretty sketchy at the start of the trip. They brought me to an apartment complex that a couple of the girls would be living in but not my exact one. This was where I would stay for the 3 days. I can't complain...the only thing was it is so hot here right now...and I am spoiled with AC normally but I'll get over it. I had a little time to get settled then they picked me up for dinner. I had a great dinner with those 2 and Ivano joined us, he is in charge of all the event planning. I had a one of my favorites, Tagliata con rucola, grana, e balsamico (cut steak with rucola, Parmesan, and balsamic vinegar). They were great company, asked me a lot of questions, and overall I think I gave them a first good impression.

Sleepy time. The time change was already messing with me. I went to sleep pretty early but woke up at 3am and didn't go back to bed until 7am. Good thing I didn't have to be ready until noon. I got picked up by Marco our trainer. We had to go take some passport photos for some documents. Then we met the crew at the Sponsors factory. Our main sponsor is Pietro Carnaghi. They make huge equipment that Boeing and other huge companies use to produce energy...i probably got that all wrong...gotta do more research. But the tour was very impressive. I met the sponsors and they were fabulous...I felt like I had met them before they were so welcoming. I took pictures, did some interviews and that was that. Next I was off to my physical. I was a little nervous considering I am not 100% yet...but I passed. I was invited to dinner but after I got back to the apartment I couldn't keep my eyes open. I ended up sleeping until 330PM the next day. Luckily I had nothing to do. I chose to just relax and wait until dinner. Carlo picked me up along with his family and we had a great dinner. None of them spoke English so I had to step it up. I surprised myself with my skills. Had Branzino, spinach and wine...love food in Italy...so fresh.

I am leaving tomorrow morning with a great feeling. So happy I made this trip...now they really know me as a person not only Lindsey Berg the volleyball player. Even though the town is so very small, the organization is like a family, and the team is going to surprise a lot of people. Oh and did I mention it is only 20 min from Milan...shhhh. Can't wait to be back on the court in Italy again.

National Team Update

I know it seems like I forgot about Volleyball a little bit on my blog, but I will have to admit it is hard to talk about it when I'm not competing. But I am still on the National team training right now and hope to be competing in September for the NORCECA Championship. But as we speak my team USA is representing at World Grand Prix. For all of you that don't know... this tournament happens every summer. It's the longest tournament ever...3 weeks guaranteed and a 4th if you make the finals. USA sent a predominately young team this year, along with Olympians Stacy Sykora, Nicole Davis, and Nancy Metcalf to lead by experience. Off to Brazil they went for the first week.

Brazil def. USA 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 (we stuck close @ the start but the Olympic Gold Team was a little too much...we got them in 3 years don't worry)

It was a tough first week, but I know week two is looking bright for them. They traveled for almost 32 hours to Chinese Taipei where they found themselves in the middle of a typhoon. Am I happy that I'm not there? Just joking. After a couple days of practice they were ready to match up with fellow NORCECA team Dominica Republic.

USA def. Dominican Republic 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 23-21 (what a match, can't wait to watch it on video)

Netherlands def. USA 12-25, 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13 ( I wish I was there to watch that one...what a promising future for us. Netherlands a very experienced team)

Next up is Germany again tomorrow. I have a feeling Germany is in for a unpleasant surprise. They didn't see the real USA the first time. Wow I got goose bumps writing that...I can't wait to be back out on the court in that uniform. Good luck ladies...miss u guys.

School of Style

After my experience with my secret client, and deciding I definitely wanted to pursue more styling I decided to google "How to become a stylist." Pretty corny I know but you can google anything now days. And guess what I found...School of Style.

School of Style is a 1-3 day intensive course about the business side of being a stylist. It is taught by celeb stylist Luke Storey. It is the only class you can find actually taught by a real working stylist. I must say I was really nervous. It felt like I was going to the first day of school after a long summer. Instead it was the first day of school after 7 years...lol. What was I going to wear?? I opted for a normal outfit of mine...MEMBERS ONLY denim black, black Enza Costa tunic, Louis animal print scarf, Oliver Peoples shades, and Lanvin ballet flats. Didn't want to try too hard.

I was the second person to get to class out of 14. Once Luke introduced himself and was so very nice my nervousness disappeared. Everyone else started to roll in and the class began. I don't want to bore you with all the details, even though they are not boring at all. But all I have to say is I learned everything I would in one 8 hour class as I would as being an intern to a stylist for a whole year. It was incredible. I wish I could team up with him to market his class because he could make even more money then he is. Especially in LA with all of the aspiring stylists. I knew some things going into the class but he put it all together for me and now I have a great understanding of how things work.

I really want to participate in day 2 and 3 but the problem is they are not set dates. Volleyball is still my number one priority right now and I could never skip practice for it. But if the opportunity arises and I am free I am all for it. Thank you Luke for taking time to teach us aspiring stylists the ins-and-outs of the styling game.

Who every though playing games in your late 20's could be so much fun. I have to admit it wasn't the games but it was the company. The official game crew...Athena, KG, Mustard, J, and I....what a crew. It was Jenga, Uno, and Questions all night. Possibly in my top 5 most fun nights ever. Maybe because it was so spontaneous. The decision was made around 830pm. We were supposed to go to Ralphs and cook Lasagna...instead we stopped at my favorite spot Louie...which has a take out market, and got food there. Never did we play along like we cooked it...J still thinks KG layered 50 Lasagna noodles...the best we ever had.

Beyond Volleyball

No I have not decided to stop playing volleyball...but I have decided to start pursuing some other interests as I continue my volleyball career. As blog followers of mine you have obviously begun to realize my passion for fashion. I know in the future when my vball career is over it is a goal of mine to own a boutique, personal shop for people, and help style people to look the best they possibly can. I have been fortunate enough to be able to practice on some of my friends and family in the personal shopping and styling area. But recently I was approached by someone pretty high profile for some advice and help. I would disclose her name but I haven't asked her about it, and what if I did a bad job then everyone would know it was me...lol.

Anyway I was honored and thrilled at the same time. She asked if I could dress her for some specific events and we would see how it went from there. I immediately started doing research online. I put together an email of initial items from online stores that I thought would suit her well. I also needed to get to know her likes and dislikes a little better...didn't want to go too far out of her comfort zone at first. She loved everything...except the leggings...but I told her I would get her into them...Here are a few things I picked out for her...

You can find all of these on shopbop.com...one of my favorite online boutiques. Obviously it is a random group of clothing but those are just a few of the examples. So I ordered a bunch of the grouping that I picked online, and then I was off to shop.

It was my first time officially pulling clothing for someone. Luckily I have become a regular at one of my favorite shops Intermix on Robertson Blvd. My girl Asia (sorry if I spelt that wrong) always looks out for me and remembers me. Normally I am helping my friends shop in there but I do some shopping of my own also. Since I am cool with them they let me just put everything on hold for 2 days since I knew I was bringing my client in the store. Normally as a stylist you can take everything home but you have to either purchase 20% of the total or pay it anyway. And for the first time shopping for my client, I didn't know exactly how much of it she was going to like...so thank you Intermix gals...you the you the best.

I shouldn't have been worried because she ended up liking almost all of it and we made some great purchases there, along with Rock & Republic (big shout out to my people there too...Hawaiians are everywhere), Kitson Studio, and Vince. Other stores we visited were Lisa Kline, Kitson, and Curve (one of my favorites but very pricey). She was very smart with her money and kept me in a range and chose things she really knew she would wear more than once.

It was a long day of shopping. We returned to my loft hoping the package had arrived from Shopbop...you can never rely on overnight shipping. Although she didn't get to try those on, she was set for one of her events and will check out the other clothes this week.

Throughout the whole experience she continued to thank me...but I just kept saying thank you back. I loved everything about it...I realized it really is something I wanted to pursue. I will be putting a Lookbook together for her so she can put things together herself and be more confident dressing herself. Hopefully I did a good enough job for her to hire me again...thank you mystery client. And by the way...I got her in those leggings...lol

Birthday

First of all I am so behind on my blog and I am so sorry. I just want to say a quick couple things about my Birthday. Thank you to all of my girls and 2 of my guys for spending a great night with me. We went to my favorite restaurant downtown LA...Bottega Louie...and then ended the night at Les Deux. I was pretty tired already from the week of ESPY festivities but I managed to make it through the night and we all had a great time. We finished the night off by all having a sleep over @ my loft. Quite an interesting sight. Aero mattress was a big hit...

Overall another successful Birthday. Thank you Mom and Dad for my washer and dryer, Sis for my knives and the block to hold them, sprinkles, roses (from the guys outside the club Brook, and Jack), and all my friends who decided to buy me the exact same gift...you all know what it was...and they are all still sitting @ my house. Oh and how can I forget...Kim buying me balloons...including a big 3 and 0...too bad I turned 29....I love you KG.

Next year I might be out of the country for my Birthday so I am glad I got to celebrate this one in LA in style. I have no pics to show proof of the night but maybe that is a good thing. But I'll try to get a hold of a few from the other gals. Thanks again for all the Birthday wishes...

ESPYS

ESPYS...that's right. Once again I was fortunate enough to go to the ESPYS again. The week started out strong on Monday night at the Playboy Mansion for one of the Pre-ESPY parties. Of course I don't have pictures but if you find Kim Glass she might. I am not a big picture taker so when I do have pictures they are normally gifted to me from other people. It was fun to actually see the PBoy Mansion after hearing so much about it. But really it is just like any other big venue...but good old HH markets it well. Here is a general picture. The red carpet was set out right in front of the main house. Thank you UA for the hook-up.

Tuesday night was dinner with some of the UA crew and the official Pre-ESPY party at the J-lounge in downtown LA. Very convinient for me since I live down there. Here is my one picture from the dinner. Pretty pathetic I never have good pics from great events. I need to get better at that. This is Eric O. (where is my hat?) and I right before having our espresso...getting charged for the night.

Wednesday was the actual day of the ESPYS. I had practice in the morning. I rushed home and Molly (bomb make-up artist) met me at my house to help me out. I ended up doing my own hair and rushing to get ready only to wait for my date. My date was long time college friend, ex-NFLer, turned Financial Manager, head of the Jack Brewer Foundation Mr. Jack Brewer. It was great to go with a good friend that appreciates sports and athletes as I do. We got there late but it ended up being fine. After the show I met up with Kim in the VIP room and the night continued from there.

Happy 4th everyone. I know it is a little late but I had a me day today. Normally on the 4th I am overseas at a Volleyball tournament, or I am in Hawaii at the beach, or at a BBQ somewhere drinking and eating way too much. This year I did it a little different. Woke up early cooked my egg whites and turkey bacon. Got workout number 1 in. Cardio and weights. Had a little snack while I blogged a little. Then went to the pool for some sun while I read the Bio of Chanel. Then decided to go for workout number 2...felt great. Ran hills on the treadmill and helped an elderly woman learn how to use the machines...she said I made her day and she is now more comfortable in the gym. I told her it was great she is working out. I was a Daymaker today. After my second workout took a long shower, ate another snack and started to blog again. It has been an interesting day but ended well. I feel good about how I spent the 4th this year...might make it a habit. I promise to surprise a lot of people this coming season...stay tuned.

There are all different colors and styles. I'm not a huge fan of the things that they say like let's go...but the material is so luscious that it doesn't even matter. I just bought a pair of purple one's. I'm trying to add a little color to my life. I will add more to my closet soon. You can find them at the Ron Herman store on Melrose in Fred Segal. Go and get a pair...you won't regret it.

The Los Angeles based designer, who's collection bares her signature name, take a minimalist approach and "is about the woman who's not interested in trends but is inspired by individuality, unpretentious style and life experience". She uses tissue weight fabrics that are meant to layer over one another. I have never felt fabric so soft...you will never want to wear anything else...I love soft.

Recently I have bought some of her items from a couple boutiques in LA, but yesterday I was at Fred Segal on Melrose and they have the best selection...More about Fred Segal later.

This brand is the business. Martin Margiela is a Belgian fashion designer that keeps a very low profile. His ultra discreet trademark consists of a piece of cloth with the numbers 0-23. He has simple yet perfectly detailed and fitted pieces. Ones that will never go out of style that will make a statement every time you wear them. I would buy the whole collection if I could. I can't wait for the fall stuff to hit the stores. Gots to save up.

I rocked this last night off the shoulder with some liquid leggings...the shirt doesn't have the shoulder pads that was just for his runway show. The other pieces that I have are just fabulous. If you are in the LA area Fred Segal has a great collection. Check it out.

Well...I have been horrible with my blog skills. I guess I am still getting settled here in LA. I finally moved into my new Loft. Slowly but surely I am filling it with furniture and making plans for some renovations when I leave back to play overseas. I am loving living in Cali. I get to do what I love to do...which is volleyball and I also get to explore some other interests I have. It is quite a difference from living and training in Colorado Springs. There is actually something I could be doing at all times. It is having a life while playing volleyball, something I am not used to and trying to manage. My knee is doing great and just trying to get better and stronger everyday. I am on my grind because it's my time...just my new little saying. I don't know if I mentioned before that I signed with another Italian team...Villa Cortese. I am so excited to be back in Italy playing. I miss the competition and the intensity of the sport. Training in Anaheim is going well. Loving Hugh's (our coach) style of play and coaching. I have learned more about volleyball in 2 months than I have in the last 15 years. I'm excited to actually play under him as soon as I'm back competing.

A couple weekends ago my good friend Jack Brewer had a big fundraiser for his and Marion Barber's foundation. I had a great time. My girlfriend Kat worked very hard to put it together and it turned out fabulous. So many of my old college friends were there and it was just a blast. Mint Conditioned performed...they are so talented. Kat got to sing one song with them and she was great...it's really where she should be. I had a great time putting my outfits together for these events. I also went a little out of my comfort zone with my hair. Sporting bangs and a ponytail for the main event. It was a little much for the normal Minnesota fashion...but I'm going to be me where ever I am. I had the perfect little dress (Gucci) paired with Louis Vuitton heels, bag and earrings...loved it. It will be repeated many times...and I don't care what people say about it. Overall the weekend was a success and I am proud of Jack and his foundation.

To all of my blog followers I am so sorry I have not updated recently. It has been quite and adventure relocating to LA and beginning my new life here. Practice has been intense and my knee situation gets better everyday. It feels great to be back out on the court. I also recently bought a loft in Downtown LA. I love it...it's my lil nest, a place where I can escape to. I have a lot of decorating to do, and it probably won't be finished until next summer. But I will post some pics when I get it in order. I also signed a contract to go back to Italy and play next season. I will be back in the Milan area in the city Villa Cortese. I can't wait to get back out there and play.

I am loving being in Cali. I am so close to family and friends. I am meeting great new people everyday, and it is truly the start to a great 4 years. That's all for now but I will get back on it soon.

Loft Shopping

For the last week and a half I have been trying to decide where I want to live. It is such a great time to buy and I know Cali will be my home for the next 4 summers so I think it's the best next move for me. I finally decided I wanted to be downtown LA. I love what the city has done and there is so much room for growth still. I love lofts...like I love fashion. It is a home that is a blank canvas and you can create the whole feel of it. Think out of the box. Be creative. Do what no one else has done. The possibilities are endless.

I think I have narrowed it down to 2 loft buildings. The Biscuit Company Lofts, and Barker Block.

There is only one loft in the Biscuit building that I am considering, and right now that one is my first choice. The Barker Block is newer and has a bunch of options but is still my second choice. They both have beautiful pools, workout facilities and great restaurants in the surrounding area. They are actually very close to each other...in the Arts District of Downtown LA. Meeting my Dad up there tomorrow afternoon to try out one of the restaurants. It's called Church & State...heard it is remarkable...can't wait.

The Big Move

So a lot had been going on with my in the last 2 weeks. I made the BIG MOVE to Cali to start training again with the National Team. It was such and exciting move for me for a few reasons. First of all I was ready to get back to my normal life...my vball life. Second it's Cali and I am so close to my parents now. I try to see them at least once a week. And third there is so much to do here. Here are a couple things I have already done.

I am so behind in my blog. I was in Italy, Minnesota, Miami, North Carolina, and California all in one month and haven't had much free time to update everyone. I finally finished my Italian update so now it's time for Miami.

First of all this was my first trip to Miami...I actually went my freshman year in college to see a high school friend but we didn't really experience Miami so I don't count it. The main reason for the trip was to celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of the Jack Brewer Foundation. A month or 2 ago I was in NY for one of his events. I try to support his foundation as much as possible and hope to be more involved soon.

I got there on Thursday and arrived at the Fontainebleau Hotel. Supposedly the place to be. The event was being held in one of the Penthouses. The space was unbelievable...4 or 5 bedrooms, private pool, jacuzzi, ocean view and everything else you can think of. I immediately changed into my zebra print swimsuit and got some sun. After then venturing down to the pool at the private cabana, I checked into my room and decided to chill out a little. As I was relaxing I tried to find my wallet...no where to be found. I was going crazy. It wasn't at the Penthouse, wasn't anywhere. All I could think of was it was stolen out of my purse or I left it in the taxi cab...too bad there are about 1 million cabs in the city. I was certain it was gone and immediately started cancelling everything. What a way to start my trip...I was so angry and couldn't shake it. I met Jack and a couple of his friends at one of the 9 restaurants in the hotel. The food was amazing...yet I was still mad. We decided to hit up the club Set...I was still mad. I decided to call it a night, and wait for my friend Kat to arrive into MIA so I could vent to her. She got in around 2am and we both passed out...hoping for a better day.

The next couple days were filled with sun and helping Jack get ready for the party. We went to a couple great restaurants. One called Vita...amazing. I had the best artichoke & lobster salad. Probably one of the best dishes I have ever had. We also got some Cuban food on Ocean Dr. the last night at Larios on the Beach. Great food. The other clubs with we checked out were LIV in the Fontainebleau hotel (good music, good crowd), and the Louis Lounge in the Gansevoort Hotel (cool vibe).

Overall the trip was a success. Oh wait did I mention my wallet got returned...yes 24 hours later. A photographer that works with Jack was in the Penthouse when I first arrived. Somehow my wallet ended up in his photo bag...don't ask cause I don't know. And he also felt the need to tell me that he found it next to his Gold Bond that his friend needed for a reason I should not say. Anyway, long story short, I was happy since I got all of my info and wallet back, but still was mad that he had it for a whole day and I had already cancelled everything. But the trip ended on a high note.

I was then off to North Carolina to see my sis and her little ones...Lexi and Noa.

Grown Men Crying at a Basketball Game

I promised you that I would talk about Italian Basketball games a little. A couple weeks ago I was back in Italy in one of my favorite cities, Bologna. It is a little big city. Rome, Milan, and Florence could be compared to NY, Chicago, and LA. Bologna could be compared to Minneapolis. Bologna is also a huge basketball city in Italy. It is not normal for one city to have 2 A1 (the highest league) teams. But Bologna does, Fortitudo and Virtus. And there are 2 separate fan clubs, half of the city is with Fortitudo and the other half with Virtus. Every year they have 2 derbys and they are crazy...probably one of the most entertaining games each year. No matter how good one team or the other is...it always ends up a battle. Unfortunately I missed that game...but I got to see another Fortitudo game. They were on I think a 7 game loosing streak. Not a good look at all.

Let me go back for a second and talk a little about the fans. They are crazy...it is hard to use any other word...maybe die hard, lunatics...I think you get the picture. Grown men and women dressed up yelling constantly at the refs, players, and coaches. Running up to the barriers around the court waving their hands and yelling words I can't write on my blog.

Whether they know or understand the game, it doesn't matter they will still scream and yell. They even enjoy yelling at the American players the most. Luckily I understand Italian so I know what they are all saying. And this trip I actually decided to put one Italian in their place for screaming about my friend. Throughout the whole game he was speaking of how bad the Americans were, and that Americans are s%$^%%t and so on and so forth. After the game was finished he decided to ask me if I had a piece of gum. I told him I do have one but it is American so he probably won't like it. He then went on for 10 min apologizing and trying to explain himself. I joked around with him for a little bit acting like I really was mad...then gave in a gave him a piece of orbitz. I bet he will look around the next time he decides to speak bad about Americans.

The game that I was at ended up going into 3 overtimes. It was crazy. The game started at 830 pm and ended at almost 12. I was starving and my back hurt from sitting in horrible benches. But it was definitely worth waiting til the end. The team and more so the fans were so happy to see the team finally win, they knocked down security and stormed the court. I also spotted at least half a dozen grown men crying. As an athlete I understand how emotional it can get, and I have definitely cried after a few games. But I just don't understand the fans crying...

But gotta hand it to the Italians for enjoying, respecting, and loving the game...
